Scientific American: Brain synchrony illustrations

This was a super fun and unique project from Scientific American, who were looking for a couple of illustrations to complement their article on Brain Synchrony.

It’s a rare treat to be able to draw cute animals as part of a project, so I was excited to be assigned as the solo artist for the brief.

Starting with digging into the article and research, the challenge for this project was to build a layout that would complement the article, allowing readers to quickly understand the concept of brain synchrony, as well the method used in a key study performed on fruit bats.

Color-coding played a big role in conveying the information, so balancing legibility for colorblind readers was a priority from the get-go.

Concept Sketches

Various concepts were developed to try different ways of presenting the information alongside the article. Color was key in conveying the information and so was brought in from the start.

Tight Sketches

Sketches were refined before going to final linework, color and layout.
