For this year’s prompts it was fun to dip in and create a set of illustrations to show some of the unique ways anatomy has evolved in animals to be different to our own. This was a super interesting theme with plenty of rabbit holes to go down!
Undertaking the prompt list when we were all deep in lockdown provided a nice way to focus on something fun and to connect with the wider scientific illustration community. My favourite part of the annual October challenges is seeing the unique spin of other illustrators’ work.
Looking back, it was pretty ambitious to try and tackle the whole prompt list during this time without a plan to pace myself or have a sustainable routine in place. It was a good lesson on finding balance between work, life and personal projects that has carried through into the way I approach self-directed work since.
Despite past Susie burning out by the sixth day, I was pleased to come out of the challenge with a couple of sets of powers of ten illustrations showcasing some weird animal anatomy.
The illustrations were sketched using Ye Olde pencil and paper first, before bringing into Procreate for final linework.
Many thanks to Learn Medical Art for setting another great prompt list, and to the lovely illustration community for being a continual source of support and inspiration year-round.
